Bruno Engler came to Canada in 1939, the last of the Swiss Mountain guides hired by Canadian Pacific. He was a climber, ski instructor, cinematographer, occasional actor and writer, as well as one of the Canadian Rockies’ great story-tellers and enduring characters.
Engler organized the first Veteran’s Ski Race, an event over which he presided until his death. Bruno’s spirit lives on with a group of his friends who continue to run the longest consecutively running annual ski race in Canada.
The race format is a two-run GS held on the Cascade slope and finishing in front of the Day Lodge. Bruce Henry, a former National Team Coach will be Chief of Course and course setter.
Bruce will also hold a race clinic for those interested in brushing up on their gate running skills on the Friday morning prior to the race.
Age categories for both men and women are: 35–44, 45–54, 55–64, 65–74, 75–79 and over 80.
There are Ram Award Medals for the first three racers in each age category, and trophies awarded for the fastest male and female racers, the oldest male and female to race that day, and the fastest male and female in the 65+ age category. Get yourself garbed up in costume to enjoy the fun and win a trophy too!
The awards will be given out at the famous Swiss-style gourmet dinner at which you must be present to collect your “hardware” and prizes. With your entry fee you get to keep your bib as a souvenir and a mounted photograph of yourself on the course.
