Lake Agnes Tea House

Banff National Park remains one of the rare places on this earth where one can experience natural beauty, the exhilirating outdoors and history all at once.

One of the many jewels to visit is the Lake Agnes Tea House at Lake Louise.

Named after the the wife of Canada's first Prime Minister John A. MacDonald, Lady MacDonald visited the lakes above Lake Louise in 1886 and was astonished by the surrounding beauty. Shortly after the turn of the century the Canadian Pacific Railway built the Teahouse (1901) and it began serving tea in 1905.

Originally serving as a refuge for hikers, the Teahouse became a hiking destination for more and more visitors to the area where it thrives today as a beautiful location to drink over 100 varieties of tea, and offers many other goodies like freshly baked bread and hearty soups and sandwiches. One can enjoy all of these offerings while overlooking Lake Agnes, Mirror Lake and Lake Louise right from original tables and chairs.

The Teahouse is family run and you will feel that when you visit. Be sure to bring Canadian or US cash or travellers cheques. Credit cards can't be accepted because there is no electricity there!

The hike takes about an hour to an hour and a half beginning from the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Horses can also be rented from the Brewster stables to gain access.

More details regarding the hike can be found on our Banff.com hiking page here.

Banff.com strongly recommends you visit if you are here during the open Summer months. Bring your camera, an appetite, and give yourself some time to take in the natural beauty that is waiting for you at the Lake Agnes Tea House.
